Week 1 (graphic and illustration)

Graphic design

1) Creating two alphabets with objects found in my room.

Since I’m Lithuanian, I decided to make the Lithuanian alphabet first. As an international student I often miss home, therefore this alphabet was made specifically from the objects I brought from my country and things that reminded me of home. That added a more personal touch to the assignment and it gave me a bigger challenge to find all unique letters of my alphabet.

I also wanted to create an English alphabet, because it’s my second language and I’ve grown accustomed to it during my studies here and my daily life. For this I used mundane objects and trinkets I’ve collected here in the Netherlands, which made the second alphabet less substantial but fun to create nonetheless.

2) Translating “dream” in my language while using created alphabets.

In Lithuanian the word “dream” has two different meanings based on the context. The first version, “sapnas”, means something that you make up in your sleep. By definition It’s closer to daydreaming, and is usually associated with passiveness or lack of action.

The second version, “svajonė”, means something that you desire, an aspiration you set up in your mind. This version of dream is much more passionate, as it’s rooted in determination to work hard and reach any goal you set your mind to.

Illustration

1) Making a leporello of my room.

For this assignment I made a full 360° panoramic drawing of my room. I used watercolors as my medium since I don’t often get to use them. This assignment also got me a chance to work with colors which is not my typical style.

2) Making documentations of objects in my space.

Instead of taking pictures of the objects I decided to draw them in color. This way, I could practise drawing from real life. In total I drew 17 items.

Theory

1) Bringing a print of an artwork I like; thinking of storyboards based on the artwork.

For theory I chose to bring an artwork by an American illustrator Coles Phillips. I picked this specific piece because I really like its colors, composition, and the artist’s use of negative space. When looking at this illustration I immediately thought about where the woman is looking and what she sees beyond the image. That inspired me to come up with different storyboards/angles for this piece, which I then sketched out in my dummy.

2) Taking something meaningful to class.

For my object, I brought a ceramic butterfly magnet I got as a parting gift from my roommate. The butterfly was brought from New Mexico, and it was made out of wild black clay and colorful glaze. I chose this object because it reminds me of her and all the wonderful memories we made together.
